I created ‘Esperanza’ as a community mural, on the corner of Lorne and Hazel Street near Downtown Sudbury to commemorate the lost yet still lingering Italian culture of the area. Little known to many people, the building this mural was created upon was once a bustling market. It was important to me to capture the theme of that, and that although, neighbourhoods and areas change, hope should remain constant.
In this light, I wanted to brighten the area by painting an Italian woman with an array of foliage leading up to her.
As my first mural, it was a wonderfully exciting project! I hope to continue to have the opportunity to participate in more artistic community-based projects such as this one. The delight of neighbours, local friends and folks alike running by to say hi, bring me a coffee and just spread general support was overwhelmingly amazing. I will never forget the experience.
